Born in Vendôme, Jean-Baptiste-Donatien de Vimeur, count de Rochambeau, became an officer in 1742 and, as lieutenant general, commanded 60,000 men sent by the French government to help the Americans during the war of independence. He succeeded in joining with General George washington and contributed to the taking of York-town from the British under General Cornwallis (1781). Returning home, Rochambeau became governor of Picardy and Artois and a marshal of France in 1791. During the revolution of 1789, he was appointed (1792) to lead the Army of the North, but was soon replaced by General nicolas luckner. Imprisoned under the Terror, he escaped the guillotine thanks to the fall of maximilien Robespierre on 9 Thermidor, Year II (July 27, 1794).
